Asoka is a 2001 Indian epic historical film set between 269 BC and 222 BC, telling the life story of Ashoka from childhood to death. The film was produced and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who hired six technical advisors to accurately portray the clothing, jewelry, architecture and language of ancient India. The production design was created by 1-India Group; they used computer generated imagery for exterior views of buildings and crowds because filming on location would have been too expensive. The music was composed by Monty Sharma and A.R Rahman. The Hindi songs were composed by A. R. Rahman as per the situation as it suited the story. Ashoka was released on 15 November 2001, in India and overseas. The film was screened at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival (out of competition), New York Asian Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Marrakech International Film Festival and London Indian Film Festival among others. It was critically acclaimed upon release, but failed commercially due to stiff competition at the box office caused by another historical film "Lagaan", also starring Shah Rukh Khan. However, it fared better than "Lagaan" outside India. The story is set in India, with the main characters of the film being loyalists to the Maurya Empire. Gautam Buddha is also shown as a pivotal character in Ashoka's life. Ashoka's wife Kaurwaki is shown to be an important figure in his life. The film begins with Ashoka (Shah Rukh Khan), hearing of his father's death at Kalinga, where he was fighting a war against King Rubel of Kamboja. He consoles Durdhaman (Sarvadaman Dassani), who was very fond of Ashok's father Bindusara (Arjun). Ashoka's father, Bindusara had earlier defeated and killed the previous Ruling King of Asoka (Vardhamana). Ashoka was born to Bindusara and his wife Kamala (Shriya Saran). Ashoka, while still a child, is invited by Kalinga's new king, Rajbhog (Jalil Siddiqui). He proposes that the Asokas send one of their royal princes to Kalinga to be educated. Invited by Rajbhog, Ashoka leaves his mother Kamala at home and heads for Kalinga. At Kalinga, Ashoka is immediately made the King's friend, and becomes very fond of Rajbhog. Ashoka is happy as he believes that his education in warfare and horses will benefit the future of his country, as well as himself. He meets his friend Brihadbala (Amitabh Bachchan), who is just as naïve and innocent as he is. Effectively a spoiled "royal prince", Brihadbala greatly dislikes Rajbhog after he discovers that the Asokas' philosophy is to not be aggressive and to not covet other people's wealth. cfa1e77820
